We're invited to understand our protagonist rather than put up with one dimensional characters.įor example, how can you not be moved when you learn that a young boy - after becoming deaf at age 13 ( due to a fever) - stops talking due to kids bully him in the playground - accusing him of sounding like a frog. The author weaves into the story allowing her readers to engage with the characters. No cliché 'broken' 'TORMENTED' HEATHCLIFF types. It's about survival and making the best out of life. Practically orphans - they're NOT despondent and melancholy - in fact this book doesn't have any self pitying moments. You're drawn to all the characters and you're really rooting for the Reed family (5 brothers) to make it. *Can be read as a Stand Alone or part of sequels. Nor is it the usual run of the mill NA/YA plot. It's not a fluffy chick lit read as the cover and title might suggest.
